I wanted to share a personal story with you regarding the importance of a “resolute budget.” Recently, my son and daughter-in-law were preparing for her parents’ first visit to the US while balancing two jobs and a new baby. I offered to help them spruce up their front landscaping, and my daughter-in-law gave me a strict budget of $100. Initially, I was tempted to spend my own money to create a more “lush” display than $100 would allow. However, as an educator teaching personal finance, I realized I had to respect their financial boundaries. The backbone of successful money management is sticking to decisions despite challenges. I worked with a nursery employee to find an assortment of plants within that limit, ultimately spending $98. This experience reminded me that a budget is often a finite amount of money that we simply need to make work. By being unwavering and purposeful, you too can have a “resolute budget” for successful money management.
